Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas: The State Park Where Visitors Find 1-2 Diamonds Everyday! πŸ’ŽπŸ˜²

Just days ago, a visitor to the park found a 2.12 carat diamond! (And, he didn't even have to dig.) Since 1972, this Arkansas state park has been inviting visitors to find diamonds! And, they do. Every year the state park has 4-5 diamonds over 2 carats found. So, how long can they keep this going? Cox says, "Indefinitely". Back in the '90's the state tested the mine to evaluate the deposit that contains the diamonds and it goes 600 feet deep!

Historical jewelry #TBT πŸ’Ž August's newest birthstone, Spinel, has a long history of being misidentified for a ruby. In fact, many famous rubies are spinel!

The Timur Ruby of the British Crown Jewels, the center uncut 352.5 carat stone in this necklace, is actually a red spinel. It is inscribed with the names/dates of it's 6 previous owners from about 1300's-1754. The British took the Timur in 1849 as part of an Indian collection and turned it into a necklace in 1853, as part of the British Crown Jewels. It was believed to be a ruby all the way up until 1851.

What is your favorite diamond shape? πŸ’Žβœ¨πŸ’
#pickyourfave #diamonds

The shape of a diamond can drastically alter and enhance the qualities of a stone. Diamond shapes can create the illusion of bigger size or make it sparkle more. Women dream about big stones; fancy shapes look bigger than others, such as oval or marquise shapes. Shape is not the same as cut. Shape refers to the diamond’s physical appearance and cut refers to the ability to reflect light. The shape doesn’t belong to the 4C’s diamond’s attributes.

Happy Birthday, August babies! πŸ™Œβœ¨πŸŽ‚

The traditional birthstone for August is peridot: This gemstone comes in several variations ranging from yellowish green to brown, but most consumers are attracted to the bright lime greens and olive greens. Peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth and brought to the surface by volcanoes. In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Today, most of the peridot supply comes from Arizona, US.

What do you think of August's new birthstone?! πŸ˜²πŸ’Ž In 2016, a BRAND NEW birthstone, Spinel, was added to the month of August! This is only the 2nd update to the American Gem Trade Association's official birthstone list since it was created in 1912.

Ancient gemstone merchants revered spinel, and it was widely sought after by royalty. It was then known as ‘balas ruby.’ In fact, many famous "rubies" in crown jewels from around the world are actually spinels! Examples of notable spinel in history are a 170-carat red spinel, known as the “Black Prince Ruby,” that is set in the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels, and a 398-carat red spinel that sits atop the Imperial Crown of Russia commissioned by Catherine the Great in 1763.

Here are three special tips for cleaning and storing rubies, July's birth stone!

1 To eliminate dullness, clean your rubies at home by applying a mixture of mild liquid soap and warm water.

2 Gently scrub your rubies and the mounting with a soft toothbrush. Rinse immediately with clean warm water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

3 Avoid storing rubies in a container or bag with other gemstones. Lay them separately in a flat compartment to guard against scratching softer gems.
